Tikki Tikki Tembo by Arlene Mosel

Three decades and more than one million copies later, children still love hearing about the boy with the long name who fell down the well. Arlene Mosel and Blair Lent's classic re-creation of an ancient Chinese folktale has hooked legions of children, teachers, and parents, who return, generation after generation, to learn about the danger of having such an honorable name as Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo. Memories from Childhood
"I loved this book when I was in elementary school, because I loved the rhythm of the very long name. When I bought the book to share with my daughters, they loved learning that great long name, too! Tikki Tikki Tembo, the elder, favorite son, falls into a well, and his name is so long, it is very hard for his younger brother to go get help! It all turns out ok, in case you are worried about sensitive children (but after that, mothers in China began to use short names, according to this tale)."

Great story for toddlers!
"My son absolutely adores this book! he finds it such a challenge to remember the loooooong name and takes such delight in getting it right! he really amazed me by how fast he memorized it; this was one of the first stories that he memorized and liked to read along with me. It also taught him to be careful when playing in precarious spots, especially when mom is busy doing laundry (just kidding! of course i always watch him...) It has also sparked some serious discussions such as: why is there only one ladder in town? why don't they place a cover on the well? why would the first son be the mother's only heir? why do the brothers keep playing on the well after the first one fell in? good times, good times...."
