You Are My Sunshine Artist: Elizabeth Mitchell
This is indie pop singer Elizabeth Mitchell's second children's release and it's as good as the first. Dulcimers, mandolins and human beat boxes fill the tasteful, rootsy arrangements. Mitchell's sweet delivery breathes new life into classics like Skip to My Lou and You are My Sunshine. You Are My Sunshine: Elizabeth Mitchell
"I've talked before about Elizabeth Mitchell's first CD for kids, You Are My Flower. It's a great little CD. If there were any drawbacks to the CD, it was that it was too short (less than 25 minutes) and perhaps too "folk-y" for some tastes.
One her second CD, You Are My Sunshine, Mitchell says, "Hey, you, Mr. Daddy-Guy, I hear ya. I'm gonna make it longer and mix it up for you."
Uh, OK, she doesn't really say that. Or, at least, not that I'm aware of.
But her new CD is both longer and more diverse. And why wouldn't you want a longer CD when it includes great renditions of kids' songs traditional and un-? The alphabet song done in dub-reggae style. A Bo Diddley blues (sort of). Mitchell ups the young parent hipness quotient by covering both Sesame Street ("Ladybug Picnic") and Schoolhouse Rock ("3 Is The Magic Number"). And the covers of some traditional songs with religious backgrounds -- "So Glad I'm Here" and "Jubilee" -- make me happy every time I hear them. The first half of the CD is fairly varied in tempo; the second half is much more "folk" -- very mellow.
The CD is probably best for kids under age 6, but it's truly one of those albums you may find yourself putting on even when your kids aren't around. If you at all liked her first CD, you will like this one. If you've never heard Mitchell, I'd recommend this CD somewhat over the first one. If you hated her first CD, then I just don't know what to do with you. You probably shouldn't continue reading my reviews. Highly recommended."

Sweet Songs
"This CD has some great classics, mixed with some less traditional songs. Pretty mellow, but still fun. Some songs are a little repetitive, from a parent's standpoint (the ABC song, in particular), but the kids like it. We bought it because of "You Are My Sunshine" the song I sing to my oldest every night before bed."

Beautiful!
"My husband and I play this CD each night for our 17 month old during our "family time." It's simply beautiful. Our little one loves to dance to the ABC song, and we often find ourselves singing the songs to her even when the CD isn't playing. It will be a family favorite for years to come!"

A ray of sunshine!
"Although we've started to put this CD on for our three year old when we want him to calm down and perhaps nap in the car, it is by no means dull. Elizabeth Mitchell has such a soothing voice, but yet manages to keep everyone interested in each and every song. My son actually learned his numbers from the LadyBug Picnic, and the alphabet from the Alphabet Dub at the age of 2! We have been following Mitchell for quite some time, and are looking forward to hopefully seeing her in concert next year (just missed her this season). Highly recommend to anyone looking for an easy to listen to, interesting, and fun artist for both adults and children!!"

"This CD is FULL of great songs, and I just love Elizabeth Mitchel's voice. My 2-year old daughter listens to all of the songs, she adores the "car" song and "skip to my lou" and "ABC"'s. It's a great, great CD!"

The Best!

Top-shelf kids' music that adults will love too
"We have all of Mitchell's albums; they will go down as the soundtrack to my daughter's infancy and toddlerhood. She can't stop asking for "John the Rabbit" off this one, and sings a lot of the other songs as well. Mitchell's voice is both soothing and cheerful. I love this record."

Unconventional kids music!!
"It was nice to find a cd that is not kitchy music for kids. This is a very calming, easy listening, folk cd. We play it in the car on the way into town and she loves to listen to it."

You are my sunshine
"This is the best cd. I bought it because I sang the sunshine song to my daughter, but didn't know all of the words. Thought she would appreciate listening to someone with a nicer voice. She loves it! I have collected other cd's by Elizabeth Mictchell. I even listen to them when my daughter in not around."

Sweet songs...
"I purchased this CD mainly for the song, 'You are My Sunshine.' All of the other songs are great too, I would like to get all of her CD's eventually. She has a sweet voice, and it's easy, enjoyable listening for you and baby."

Brings Back Memories
"I was so surprised to see how much my daughter and I enjoy this CD together. She is 18 months old and loves to dance and listen to music. Every morning we dance and get ready for our day while listening to this CD."

Best CD Ever!!
"We LOVE Elizabeth Mitchell! I have recommended this cd to everyone I know! The songs are enjoyable for kids and parents alike. My 3 year daughter wanted to listen to this cd in the car and at bedtime for about 6 straight months when we first bought it and it remains a favorite in her regular music rotation! Most of the songs on this cd will be familiar to grown-ups but with a refreshing new twist. My daughter and I are especially found of the 'You Are My Sunshine' track as I have been singing that song to her since she was born, just like my mother and grandmother used to sing it to me. (pardon my sentimental moment!) It's cool to hear Mitchell's version of 'Three is the Magic Number' since the only other place I'd ever heard it was on the old School House Rock videos! I also liked having 'Here Comes My Baby' on this cd as the only other place I'd heard it was on the Rushmore soundtrack. All of the songs are wonderful and Elizabeth Mitchell's voice is so easy to listen to - buy it for yourself and all the kids in your life! I am so thrilled that The Land of Nod introduced my family to the wonderful talent of Elizabeth Mitchell!"

Fun, Folksy and Nostalgic
"I enjoy listening to this CD as much as my kids. My 1 year old claps and smiles along in the car. It's a visit back to childhood for me to listen to Elizabeth Mitchell's sweet rendtion of the old Sesame Street's "Ladybugs Picnic" and School House Rock's "3 is a Magic Number"."
